Once you make up your mind and find a healthy program that works for you, weight loss can be fun and motivating.

The challenge often begins with the maintenance phase. A report from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) analyzed 31 studies and found that often, people who lose weight often suffer from the dreaded “regain”.

The report, published in the Journal of the American Psychologist Association concludes that a large number of people who lose a significant amount of weight gain it all back, while only a few manage to sustain the weight loss.

Experts agree that the following practices are essential to sustained long term weight loss.

Setting goals

The ultimate goal is not to just to lose pounds, it is essential that you change your habits through reasonable and specific goals. Saying “I am going to exercise” is too general, but saying “I will walk for an hour, 4 times per week” is more specific and accessible.

Know your weaknesses

It is important to identify the moments that can make you overeat or choose unhealthy foods; they can be social situations, eating out, stress, boredom, long work days, etc. Once you identify these situations you can create your own strategies to overcome them successfully.

Eat until you feel satisfied

You heard it!  You don’t have to go hungry, because that will only make you eat more. You have to fill up on healthy, nutritious food such as vegetables and protein.

People who maintain a sustained weight loss tend to always have breakfast and have a diet rich in healthy proteins and vegetables, with the addition of healthy fats in the form of nuts, avocado, olive oil and others.
