Woman looking in the mirror after weight gain

Every doctor and patient hope for optimal outcomes from weight loss surgery, but not every bariatric surgery produces immediate, successful results. It is not uncommon for some patients to regain weight a few years after undergoing a gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, or gastric plication.

In these cases, Dr. Liza María Pompa González and our team at the International Center of Excellence for Obesity offers revision procedures forseveral types of bariatric surgery procedures. If you are looking for revision bariatric surgery after weight regain in the Tijuana, MX or San Diego, CA area, learn more about our approach to correcting unsatisfactory weight loss results.

When Is a Second Bariatric Surgery Needed?

When patients experience weight regain after surgery, they may benefit from a revision procedure. Patients gain back weight for different reasons.

For patients who underwent a gastric bypass, weight gain usually results from stretching of the stomach pouch or opening of the stoma. This makes the person hungry just an hour or two after eating.

For patients who received LAP-BAND® surgery, eating the wrong foods can cause obstruction and stretching of the stomach pouch, which also leads to overeating.

Before patients undergo a revision procedure, we will determine the cause of the weight gain to ensure that we are treating the correct issue.

If a closer look at your diet shows that you have not been following the correct diet guidelines, we will help you create a new diet plan before pursuing surgery.

Who Are Candidates for Revision Bariatric Surgery?

Patients who have previously undergone bariatric surgery, but have experience unsatisfactory weight loss results may wish to undergo revision surgery.

This includes patients who have failed to lose at least half of their original weight, patients who have developed food intolerances that are negatively affecting their quality of life, or patients who have lost but regained most of their original weight.

Which Procedures Can be Revised?

Depending on the original procedure you had completed, a revision procedure may be available. We always attempt to revise procedures laparoscopically when possible, to provide a less invasive procedure that requires less recovery time.

If you have undergone a gastric band procedure previously, Dr. Pompa may recommend gastric plication, gastric sleeve, or gastric bypass.

Those who have undergone a gastric plication in the past may be a candidate for a gastric band, gastric sleeve, or gastric bypass.

While a gastric sleeve can only be revised with a gastric bypass, a gastric bypass can only be revised with a gastric band.
