Some General Guidelines on Healthy Eating
When it comes to snacking between meals, it’s important to keep a few things in mind. Here are some general tips to consider:
- Focus on Protein – Protein will be your primary source of energy in your diet, so keep focusing on getting enough protein each day. You’ll want to get between 60g to 80g of protein on an average day.
- Avoid Carbs – Carbs are calorie bombs and are going to take up a lot of space in your stomach. Limit your carb intake each day, especially while snacking.
- Chew Thoroughly – Always chew your food thoroughly and eat slowly. This will help limit calorie intake and ensure you will not face digestive issues after you snack.
- Drink Water Between Meals – Stay hydrated through the day by having water when you are not snacking or having full meals.
Carrots and Hummus
Carrots and hummus are an excellent combination of nutritious and delicious. The carrots are a nice source of fiber and packed with vitamins, and the hummus provides protein and nice flavor.
Peanut Butter and Nuts
If you need a quick injection of energy while you’re having a snack, a spoonful of peanut butter or a handful of nuts will do the trick. They’re packed with protein and a great source of energy.
Eggs
A hardboiled egg or two can really hit the spot in the afternoon or morning. Scrambled eggs in the morning may also be what you need to help get on with your day.
Beans
Beans are an excellent source of protein and fiber, and you have a lot of variety when it comes to the kinds of beans to prepare, how to prepare them, and how they can be paired with other foods.
Lentils
Like beans, lentils offer plenty of options for preparation and serving. One option to consider is to have some lentil soup ready in the fridge or in cans that can be heated and eaten when you’re feeling a little hungry.
A Little Bit of Meat and Cheese
Meat and cheese are always a fine combo. Cut out the bread and you have a great deconstructed sandwich. Be sure to go for lean meats when possible, and to go easy on the cheese.
Fruits to Consider
Fruits are an excellent option for snacking. Some great fruits to consider when you’re feeling hungry include:
- Apples
- Avocado
- Bananas (try it with some peanut butter)
- Berries
- Cherries
- Cherry tomatoes
- Figs
- Grapes
- Mango
- Melon
- Oranges
- Peaches
- Pears
Vegetables to Consider
Vegetables are also great for snacking. Consider these vegetables when you feel hungry:
- Bell peppers
- Brocoli
- Carrots
- Cauliflower
- Celery
- Cucumber slices
- Green beans
- Spinach
You may want to cook more fibrous vegetables if you notice they give you trouble while digesting.
Yogurt
A little bit of yogurt can really hit the spot. Pairing that yogurt with some of the fruit listed above could keep you feeling full for a few hours.
Cottage Cheese
Like yogurt, cottage cheese is a great snacking option. You can add some fruit to your cottage cheese for a nice nutritious meal that’s well-balanced.
