Bariatric Surgery FAQs

Bariatric Surgery FAQs

Many patients considering bariatric surgery have a lot of questions. The answers you receive will play an important role in your final decision. To help you better understand your options and set realistic expectations, Dr. Liza María Pompa González has answered a few bariatric surgery FAQs.

Having completed thousands of bariatric surgery procedures at our Tijuana, México, surgical center, Dr. Pompa is exceptionally knowledgeable about these treatments. The entire team at LIMARP® is dedicated to helping you achieve your weight loss goals!

Is Bariatric Surgery is Right for Me?

All patients will undergo an extensive examination and consultation process to determine if bariatric surgery is the right weight loss solution for their health needs and weight loss goals. In addition to surgical procedures, we also offer non-surgical treatment options.

How Do Bariatric Surgeries Facilitate Weight Loss?

There are two categories of bariatric surgeries:

  • Restrictive: Restrictive surgeries help you lose weight by physically restricting the size of your stomach. As a result, the amount of food and calories you can consume is limited. At LIMARP, we no longer offer restrictive procedures such as the lap-band and our preferred restrictive surgery is the gastric sleeve. The intragastric balloon is a similar but non-invasive, temporary, alternative that is performed through en endoscopic procedure.
  • Malabsorptive: Malabsorptive surgeries help you lose weight by changing the way you digest food. During these procedures, the size of the stomach is reduced and the gastrointestinal tract is rerouted to change the way food is absorbed by the digestive system. Surgeries include gastric bypass, mini gastric bypass, and duodenal switch.

Dr. Pompa can help you determine which type of bariatric surgery is right for you.

Is Weight Loss Permanent?

While bariatric surgery can help you lose substantial weight, you must keep up healthy lifestyle habits in order to maintain your weight loss. At LIMARP, we will help you develop a personalized weight loss program, including plans for physical activities and nutrition for post-surgery success.

How Long Does Recovery Take?

The recovery for each procedure can vary, but typically, patients can return to work about one or two weeks after their procedure, depending on the type of work that you do. However, it is usually recommended that you avoid strenuous exercise for about six weeks after surgery.

Will I Need Plastic Surgery after My Procedure?

Not every patient will need plastic surgery, but after substantial weight loss, you may notice excess skin around your:

  • Abdomen
  • Legs
  • Arms
  • Breasts

While some patients are comfortable using compression garments, others will choose to undergo body contouring and plastic surgery procedures to remove excess tissue and tighten and tone their body for the most flattering results. At LIMARP, we have a qualified plastic surgery team at your service.
