Intragastric Balloon Description
Description
At LIMARP International Center of Excellence for Obesity in Tijuana, MX, we offer intragastric balloon surgery as a noninvasive bariatric treatment. Rather than making an incision, Dr. Liza Maria Pompa González can insert the balloon directly into the stomach through the esophagus. Once placed, the balloon is inflated and restricts the amount of food you can eat during each meal.

An intragastric balloon procedure is a noninvasive type of a method for patients to lose around 15 to 20 kilos, which is about 30 to 40 pounds. This procedure comes with nutritional preparation, psychological preparation. And it’s done in the OR with a light sedation anesthesia. We take a balloon that is a silicone type balloon through the patient’s mouth, and through the esophagus and into his stomach. It is not inflated, obviously, when it goes in. We take it down with an endoscope, and then when we have it in there, we insufflate it with a special solution, a saline solution. The advantages over just having a diet is that we have that extra tool that the patient feels full or satisfied because of the balloon. So I would say if you’re looking to do something more aggressive, instead of doing just dieting and exercise, this would be the case.
