Weight Loss Surgery in Tijuana Mexico
Obesity is a multifactorial disease and we believe it can only be successfully treated through an integrative approach that involves health care professionals with different areas of expertise that can guide patients through a carefully designed program. This program addresses and helps solve the underlying issues of obesity and helps the patient lead a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle.
At LIMARP®, we know that the solution for obesity cannot rely on a single action such as a surgery. Weight loss surgery is one definite step, for sure, as it accomplishes dramatic results in a very short time, but it is not sufficient by itself for maintaining low weight and staying healthy in the long term. Our team of doctors at the Tijuana clinic, led by Dr. Liza María Pompa González, offers an Integrative Bariatric Program that tackles obesity with a set of different complementary interventions.
So, what exactly is an Integrative Bariatric Program?
This program focuses on different areas so the patients receive well-rounded attention that covers all their needs. Each patients’ case is different and not everyone will be eligible for surgery, but only your doctor will be able to determine as such.
- Clinical intervention: We offer surgical and non-surgical procedures, depending on the patients needs and weight loss goals.
- Education: We empower our patients by providing current and evidence-based information about what to expect during their treatment and which measures they should follow through their process, both before and after their surgery. As a team, we will always be available to address all of your questions.
- Nutrition: Every bariatric patient needs to change their eating habits before and after their clinical intervention. This is why the nutritionists at the LIMARP® clinic at Tijuana offer a personal diet program along with specific recipes and guidelines to follow at different stages of their treatment. These guidelines are provided by a professional specialized in bariatric nutrition.
- Fitness: Physical activity is fundamental for keeping a healthy lifestyle. Our program includes the guidance of a physical fitness expert specialized in bariatric patients, who is sensible to their needs and challenges. Our fitness expert plans personalized exercise routines for each patient, depending on their weight loss goals and on their progress within the program.
- Psychology: Having weight loss surgery or going through any obesity program comes with great changes in your everyday life. Your daily routine and your eating habits might be the most impacted, but you can also experience changes in your self-perception and in your relationships with other people while your body transforms. Every LIMARP® patient goes through a thoughtful, caring, and psychological evaluation and is provided with counseling throughout their treatment. Our goal is to help patients so they can be in a good emotional place and have the necessary knowledge to adhere to their all-important postoperative program.
- Long term follow-up: At LIMARP®, we are committed to your weight loss goals as much as you are. Our compromise with our patient is long lasting, as our integrative bariatric program aims to deliver long term results. Our medical team at the Tijuana clinic keeps track of each patient’s progress and provides follow-up with consultation, assistance, and guidance. Revision surgeries and procedures are also available for any patient, if deemed necessary.
The LIMARP® team is composed of professionals from different disciplines, from bariatric medicine to general medicine, anesthesiology, nursing, nutrition, psychology, and fitness. Each one of our team members is certified by either international or national medical institutions and as a team, they have performed more than 10,000 weight loss surgeries in the last 10 years and we have witnessed their results first hand thanks to the testimonies of our patients.
At LIMARP®, we take your wellbeing very seriously and we are convinced that an integrative approach is the best and most efficient strategy against obesity.

Now, we’d like to talk more about our program and dive into some of the procedures, both surgical and non-surgical, that we offer at our Tijuana clinic.
Integrative Bariatric Program Candidates
Our weight loss program includes various stages such as preparation, education, surgical or non-invasive bariatric procedures, recovery and follow-up maintenance.
At your initial consultation, either at our Tijuana clinic or via remote consultation. We’ll get to know your medical history, your weight loss goals, and previous attempts at losing weight. We will run blood tests and register your body measurements. This will allow us to determine your candidacy for our different types of clinical interventions and plan a strategy according to your needs.
During your consultations prior to your weight loss surgery, Dr. Liza María Pompa González will provide all the information you need to know about your procedure, such as its benefits, risks, and what to expect during the entire treatment process. You will also receive dietary guidelines to follow before your surgical procedure in order to prepare your body. During this stage of the process, you will receive counseling so you can be mentally and emotionally prepared for the treatment and changes it will bring in the years to come. This is a great moment to clarify every one of your questions. Every patient should be properly informed so they can be aware of his or her developments and take appropriate actions in every step of the way.
When the big day arrives, you will attend our Tijuana clinic to undergo your weight loss surgery. It is vital that you do not eat or drink anything at least 12 hours before your procedure. When you arrive at our Tijuana clinic, you will be taken to a private room where you will be given a hospital gown, compression hoses, as well as head and foot coverings. Every one of your last-minute questions will be answered by our medical team. Once you are ready, you will be taken to the surgical room and receive general anesthesia. Dr. Pompa González will then begin the intervention.
After your procedure, you will be taken to a private recovery room. You will be monitored during the first few hours and will be asked to move and walk a little bit just to avoid blood clots or cramping. A rest period of two weeks is necessary before returning to your normal activities. During this recovery time, which lasts up to three months, you will begin an only liquids diet before moving onto pureed foods and solids. Compliance with the dietary guidelines will be fundamental for your recovery and for your body, which will be adapting to its new transformation.
You will receive follow-up consultation every 3 months for the first year, every 6 months during the second year, and then once every next year. These consultations can be done either remotely or at our premises at Tijuana. During these consultations, we monitor your progress and complement your treatment with psychological counseling, a personalized nutrition plan, and an exercise routine. You may also use our LIMARP® Follow-Up app and private platform, designed especially for our patients. This is a very convenient alternative that allows us to intervene more promptly if we notice any signs of alarm without you having to come down to Tijuana. It also allows you to be very aware of your development and achievements after your weight loss surgery.
Weight loss surgery has been recognized as the safest and most effective treatment for obesity and its associated diseases. On top of losing a great amount of weight, these types of surgeries lead to overall better health. The patients who come to our Tijuana clinic may obtain the best results possible out of their treatment if they commit to our program in every step of the way, from the very beginning, months previous to surgery, to our long-term follow-up guidance.
So, what are the available options at our Tijuana clinic?
Depending on your case, your procedure may be invasive or non-invasive and that will be determined by Dr. Pompa González and our medical staff once they’ve discussed what they learned during your previous consultations. Next, we’ll talk about what you should expect from each procedure and if you have any remaining questions, contact us directly or explore our website for more information.
Non-invasive Treatment Options
We have different clinical interventions for every type of patient. Among our non-invasive options, we offer the intragastric balloon procedure, a simple technique that accomplishes weight loss by restricting the size of the stomach with a soft silicone device. Our non-invasive treatment options also include a customized and monitored diet and exercise plan. You will meet with our experts to develop your personal nutrition plan and physical activity routine to start you off on your weight loss journey.
The intragastric balloon treatment is typically recommended for patients with a BMI higher than 30 when diet and exercise have not been successful. A balloon is inserted into the stomach and then filled with saline solution. This limits space for food and allows patients to eat and drink less as they feel satiety sooner. At our Tijuana clinic, we offer the traditional intragastric balloon, as well as Allurion, a groundbreaking achievement in bariatric surgery that makes the procedure easier for the patient.
Weight Loss Surgery
Weight loss surgery is recommended when other treatment methods, such as medically supervised diet and exercise, have been unsuccessful in patients with a BMI higher than 35. To treat metabolic disease and obesity, there are several different weight loss surgery options we offer at our Tijuana clinic, for example:
- Gastric sleeve: This is the most requested and practiced weight loss surgery worldwide. In this restrictive surgery, the stomach is given the shape of a tube that resembles a sleeve. By using a laparoscopic camera, the surgeon inserts a lean stamper in the patient’s belly and staples the stomach vertically; 80% of the stomach is removed, leaving the other 20% as a sleeve. This intervention allows the patient to control their food intake by consuming smaller portions. Patients with a BMI between 35 and 40 are eligible for this surgery.
- Gastric bypass: This is the second most popular weight loss surgery worldwide. A gastric bypass is meant for patients with a BMI higher than 40. During this procedure, also known as Roux-en-Y, the surgeon reduces the patient’s stomach to the size of a walnut and connects it to a distal part of the intestine. This technique not only limits the size of the stomach, but it also reduces the ability of the intestine to absorb calories. Therefore, this intervention changes the patient’s metabolism.
- Mini gastric bypass: This surgery is a less invasive alternative to the gastric bypass, especially for patients with a BMI higher than 35 that have two or more life threatening diseases associated with obesity, such as diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, or high cholesterol. In this surgery, the stomach is dissected with a lesser curvature and the intestine is slightly shortened with a duodenum-jejunum junction. This procedure provides the same, if not superior benefits to the gastric bypass and it is a more affordable alternative.
- Duodenal Switch: This surgical intervention combines the gastric sleeve surgery with the gastric bypass, as it removes 85% of the stomach, giving the other 15% the shape of a tube, and then bypasses most of the small intestine. This method is intended for patients with a BMI higher than 50.
- Metabolic surgery: If you are struggling with a metabolic condition such as type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure, and have a BMI lower than 35, metabolic surgery might be the right choice for you. A clinical intervention may change your metabolic cycle in a way that can help you reverse or resolve these conditions.
All surgeries are safe and highly effective. Patients that follow the dietary recommendations and maintain physically can see the most benefits out of their surgery. However, in very few cases, patients might regain the weight they lost in the long term if they return to old habits. In other cases, a patient that received a less invasive surgery might discover that they could have benefited more with a more invasive one. In these types of cases, a revision surgery might be necessary. This means that the surgeon modifies or enhances a surgical procedure that was done previously.
At our Tijuana clinic, Dr. Liza María Pompa González can discuss each of these with you in further detail to determine which option is right for you.
