There are no guarantees in life and bariatric surgery is no exception. Successful, long term weight-loss will largely depend on a patient’s commitment to a new, healthy lifestyle. But what does a healthy lifestyle consist of and can how can it be achieved?

For a post-Bariatric patient, a healthy lifestyle should include the following:

-Sticking to a nutritional plan. It is important to chew food well, eat slowly and stop eating before feeling uncomfortable. Patients should also start to cook more at home so they can have control over how much fat, sugar and salt goes into their food.

1

-Hydration and high calorie beverages. Hydration is essential, but sugary or high calorie drinks should be avoided at all cost. Many post-bariatric patients start ingesting too many calories in the form of beverages, putting their results at risk.

2

-Exercising on a regular basis. While it’s true that exercise is not absolutely essential for weight loss, it is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. Exercise helps patients feel better, burn more calories, improve mobility, prevent injuries and build lean muscle.

-Taking the right supplements. Due to the dramatic reduction in food intake and the malabsorption that accompanies some surgeries, it is necessary for weight loss surgery patients to include proper supplementation in their diet.

3

Reaching the point of opting for Bariatric Surgery is a process that can be complicated and also emotional for patients and it is important for them to understand that surgery is a tool and, in no uncertain terms, the beginning of the rest of their lives!

Performing weight loss surgery on a patient and then sending them home without further support is a tremendous injustice, it would be like giving someone a state of the art computer and never teaching them how to use it. Patients have to learn what to do with their new powerful tool.

To this end, LIMARP International Center of Excellence in Obesity has joined together a unique multidisciplinary team. The experience and expertise of our support team make all the difference in terms of patient success.
