Recovering from Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric Surgery is the most viable medical option available today to fight obesity in a permanent and long term manner.

Accompanied by a Comprehensive Bariatric Program, this type of surgery allows the patient to lose weight and overcome many of the health conditions related to obesity.

1

But bariatric surgery is not just about the surgery; it has to be part of a complete treatment that includes equally important phases. The first part of the program consists of a pre-surgical phase comprising of a series of evaluations and a pre-surgical diet that will help facilitate the procedure.

Once the surgery best suited for the patient’s particular situation is performed, the all-important Recovery Phase begins.

2

Depending on each case, the Bariatric Surgery patient will spend 2-3 days in the hospital, where the medical team will provide full support; but once the patient is home he or she must strictly follow medical instructions because the postoperative phase requires special care and complete adherence to the recommended diet.

Post-bariatric patients must:

– Organize home and pantry to successfully begin the recovery stage.

– Return to work until their doctor gives the go-ahead (2-3 weeks depending on case).

– Read all material provided by their doctor about what to expect after surgery.

– Limit activity to what their doctor allows.

– Follow post-surgery diet strictly.

– Punctually attend post-surgical appointments.

3

Even though current bariatric surgery offers a quick recovery time and is generally uncomplicated, the patient can expect to feel:

– Discomfort in incision area

– Nausea and dizziness

– Fatigue

These symptoms are reduced considerably if medical instructions are carefully followed.

Bariatric surgery is major surgery though, so the possibility of some side effects presenting is real, the most common ones can be:

Al tratarse de una cirugía mayor, existe la posibilidad de que se presenten algunos efectos secundarios, los más comunes pueden ser:

– Constipation

– Dumping syndrome

– Gallstones

– Infection in wounds

4

Comprehensive Bariatric Program with solid post-op phases reduces the possibilities of these effects occurring or worsening. If the post-bariatric patient follows the program strictly, he or she will obtain the best possible results with the least amount of discomfort. A patient’s permanent commitment to the program and to a healthy lifestyle is the key to ultimate success.
